The Book Whisperer is one today!

I’m one today!

A year ago today I wrote my first blog post. I took my first tentitive steps into the world of book blogging with my review of Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (and which nobody read). Over the next few weeks I tweeked, played around, changed my mind about which template to use – again and again and again – copied up more reviews from my Amazon account and practically did a cartwheel when somebody I didn’t know commented on one of my posts!

I had no idea just how huge the world of book blogging was and I was amazed by the wealth of fantastic sites out there that I had been completely unaware existed. In this first year of blogging, I have made (and even met) some wonderful friends who share my biggest passion – books! I have found people who write wonderful reviews, or have the same taste in books as me, or are just generally hugely welcoming and make me feel at home every time I visit their site and I love it!

Since starting my blog I have had over 50,000 hits – I have no idea whether that’s good or bad but frankly I am just amazed that so many people want to stop by and share in their love of reading with me and I am truly grateful for every single visit and comment I get 🙂

So, here is a little look at what have been the top posts this year:

The top two posts of all time

The most looked at post is called “The Best 11 Book Club Reads EVER!”. They are not necessarily my favourite ever books (although some of them are) but they are books that have generated the most interesting discussions at book groups I have attended.

Then have a look at the picture of the postman, click on it and see if you can spot the difference.

The three most looked at reviews

The above 3 books have had the most visits during this last year. They also happen to be among the books that I have enjoyed the most. You cam click on each book cover to see the actual review.

Most looked at author interview

I have interviewed several authors this year (all of whose books  I have thoroughly enjoyed reading) but it was Kathryn Stockett, author of The Help, that has had most visits. I actually spoke to her on the phone (which I was really nervous about) and she was just lovely!

A little thank you to all of you

By way of saying thank you for stopping by and commenting and keeping making sure that blogging about books still so much fun for me, I am having a little competition.

Here is a list of my Top 20 favourite books of all time (I have tried unsucessfully to narrow this list down and I can’t – in fact I had to struggle to get it down to only 20). I would like to send one of my favourite books to anyone who wants to enter. There are no rules other than please tell me which book you would like in your comment and why you chose it (no reason other than I am nosey ;)) and if you win I will send you that book. You have until December 15th to enter and then I will pick a winner using random.org

Here is my list of most belovèd books:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Wolf Totem by Jiang Riong

The Magus by John Fowles

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

Animal Farm by George Orwell

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Blindness by Jose Saramago

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris

Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton

Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier

Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

East Lynne by Ellen Wood

The Collector by John Fowles

Corrag by Susan Fletcher

Villette by Charlotte Bronte

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Good luck!

  1. Happy Blogging Birthday to you! It’s always lovely when you reach a milestone and makes you look back at all the joy blogging brings and all the joys blogs give to others! It’s also an excuse to treat yourself to cake, it is a birthday after all… Or maybe that’s just me?

  2. Happy birthday and many, many happy returns 😀 Although the Book Whisperer is partly responsible for my excessive expenses as far as books are concerned, I do not hold any grudge…

    Love this blog so much!

  3. Congratulations! In blogging land, a year is long!!! I remember your interview with Kathyn Stockett. I think I’d only just discovered your blog.

Of your 20 best, I’ve read only 9. But The Hunger Games and The Road would certainly feature in my best 20, too. Blindness may fall just outside it, but I did like it a lot.

How nice you’re doing a giveaway (have you entered mine, by the way?). I’d love to finally read Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson. I really don’t know why I haven’t read it.

I used to live in York (where Atkinson comes from and I think her novel is based there), so I was instantly attracted to it when it came out. However, we were a poor young family at the time and i got most of my books from the library (and I didn’t have all that much time to read, in those days). Although I have meanwhile read two or so other books by Atkinson, this first one has always eluded me.

    Anyway…. party time, Boof!!

  4. Congratulations on your blogiversary! I celebrated mine three weeks ago so we are almost twins 🙂
I have a bizarre fascination with WWI and WWII fiction, and I’ve never read All Quiet on the Western Front, so I would love that book if I am lucky enough to be selected.

I look forward to many more years of your Book Whisperings. Your choice of books is always eclectic and your reviews are wonderful to read — I’ve picked up several books thanks to your recommendations.

  9. Congratulations and happy bloggiversary! Haha, I love that you tried to cut down your favourite books to *just* 20! I’d like to read Hunger Games just because everyone’s been going on about how amazing it is. I’ve read 10 on your list and have The Road and Wolf Totem on my shelf (the latter on your recommendation, of course). Here’s looking to another wonderful year:)

  11. Congratulations on the first birthday of your most enjoyable blog! I’m looking forward to your review of Gerald Durrell’s book. It’s one of my fave comfort reads, since finding a large print copy that my Aunt gave to my Grandfather many years ago. I’m happy to have found some new authors, like Elly Griffiths from reading your reviews and to see she has a new book coming out in January (at least for those in the UK, probably not in the States yet).

  12. Happy first birthday, Boof! You’ve done extremely well for only having been going for a year! I was surprised to read that your blog is so young.

But I see why you’ve been a successful blogger. I too love your blog, as I’ve said before. And not only because you live where I want to be! 🙂

Keep up the quality blogging; we love it.

      • Ohhhh! Just to be associated with a North Yorkshire town is splendid! Thank you! Were you able to hit up Betty’s by any chance? 🙂 I imagine it’s a zoo in there, probably, busy with teagoers and people purchasing all the lovely stuff they have this time of year. Did their windows look magical?

I think I forgot to say which book I’d love to win, if you don’t mind sending all the way out here…Ethan Frome.

        Thank you for the contest!

      • Oh, forgot to say – yes I did see Betty’s but I didn’t have time to go in unfortunately 😦 I did manage to peer through the window though to see if I could see your sister – the only one who looked around your age had dark hair (in a bob maybe?) and was serving at the front.

  14. Oh Happy Happy Bloggoversary to you today/yesterday! What a wonderful accomplishment and wow, just looking through some of things you have done this past year…i’m in awe!

you have several books on your list that are my favorites too, like Jane Eyre, Life of Pi, Blindness…what wonderfully eclectic reading tastes you have! I hate to admit this, but I have read just about everything by the Brontes, Jane Eyre probably every couple of years, but I have not read Villette yet! I have also not had the good fortune of reading Magus so either one would be perfect.

Enjoy your cake and all the festivities of your anniversary bash!

I’d love to be entered for Wolf Totem by Jiang Riong. Why? Because you recommend the book to anyone and it is on my forgotten treasures list thanks to you, and I’m incredibly curious about it!
